We have a special, double-feature show for you this time.

Colorado College Bluegrass Ensemble As we do each year, we're bringing back the Colorado College Bluegrass Ensemble, this time to play for our whole first hour. Keith Reed runs the bluegrass program at CC, where students work their way through the genre and his ensembles as part of their curriculums. Keith always sends us fun players. The CC kids are a treat!

B.J.Estares Duo Sometimes, we're fortunate to find great acts right under our noses. Such is the case with blues guitarist and singer-songwriter BJ Estares. "Beej" lives right here in Colorado Springs. He grew up musically between his father’s love of big-band jazz and his mother’s for country music. Studying jazz guitar at the tender age of 12, his elder brother introduced him to the blues with Janis Joplin's music. It's been said that, if you mix jazz with country, you get the blues. If so, it only makes sense that BJ would land there.

Through a tour in the Army, raising a family with his wife of 50 years, and a long career in the trades, BJ followed his bluesy muse. He sold one song to another local who's played for us, friend and mentor Big Jim Adam. Jim recorded "No Man At All" in 2005. Later in that same year, BJ formed his band, BJ Estares and Route 61. Since then, the group has experienced steady growth in popularity in our evolving, local music scene.

BJ and the band earned honors for Best Self-Produced CD and Best Blues Band from the Pikes Peak Blues Community. They have performed as openers for American Blues Music Award winner Tommy Castro and The Pain Killers, two-time IBC winner Lionel Young, and for award-winning Texas blues man, Mike Zito.

BJ and Route 61 have performed original tunes at the Studio B Showcase in the Pikes Peak Center. They were subsequently invited back to perform their award-winning release, “Easy Street” there. BJ and the group also performed for several years as a house band at Bronco Billy’s in Cripple Creek. BJ’s new recording effort is currently in production for release this year.

For this show, BJ will play for us as an acoustic duo. Come join us on February 10th as he offers us a terrific evening of contemporary and traditional blues music
